JOE HILL’S LAST WILL takes the audience on a journey
through the life of America’s first well-known labor activist and songwriter,
Swedish immigrant, Joe Hill, who was accused of murder and executed by firing
squad at age 36 in Utah in 1915.
The action takes place in Joe’s prison cell just hours before his death
when a young reporter is sent to the jail to interview him and record his last
words. In the early hours of
morning, Joe Hill reveals to the young man some important details of his life,
his music and the methods by which he organized workers to join the IWW
(International Workers of the World).
Although the words of the play are fictional, the events described are
true. |
“With the
current wholesale assault in the United States on working people and their
unions, with a tragic crisis in worldwide immigration, and with the 100th
anniversary of Joe Hill’s death approaching in four years, JOE HILL’S LAST WILL
is a musical for our times.” – Si Kahn |
